A standard four-string is tuned E–A–D–G. Most five-strings add a low B below the E. That gives you five extra low notes and lets you play more lines across the neck instead of moving up and down it.
Why four strings remain the standard
Four-string basses are direct, comfortable and supported by the greatest number of beginner lessons. The neck is generally narrower, there is one fewer string to mute, and the visual layout is easy to understand. Four strings cover rock, jazz, funk, soul, country, punk and most classic pop without compromise.
What the fifth string adds
The low B extends the instrument below low E and can make common keys such as D, C and B more convenient. It is especially useful in modern gospel, R&B, metal, musical theater and styles built around keyboards or down-tuned guitars.
The real challenge is muting
Unused bass strings can ring sympathetically. A five-string asks both hands to control one additional string, especially the thick low B. This is learnable from day one, but it rewards deliberate right-hand anchoring and left-hand touch.
Play the low B through a bass amp. A good five-string should sound focused rather than loose or dramatically quieter than the other strings.
Can a beginner start on five?
Absolutely—if the music you want to play needs it. Beginning on four is a sensible default, not a rule. Motivation matters more than following a traditional sequence. Just expect a wider neck and spend time learning muting from the first lesson.
